Mimi Fariña with Lowell Levinger: Live in Germany Dogfish Music Released July 2017 Recorded February 7, 1988 Running time: 57 minutes
|
This CD is from a radio broadcast in Germany on February 7, 1988, recorded by Michael Kleff, who met Mimi at the 1985 Newport Folk Festival and arranged a tour of Germany. This excellent recording features live versions of five songs from her Solo album, one Richard Fariña song, and a Hoyt Axton song she had recorded with Joan for Where Are You Now, My Son?
Mimi and Banana also cover Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" and Jesse Winchester's "Defying Gravity". They also sing a capella the traditional gospel song "Daniel Prayed", which has been recorded by Stanley Brothers (1959), and Doc Watson & Clarence Ashley.
Making their official debut are five Mimi Fariña originals: "Dandelion", "Mr. Rudy", "Come Get Me Shoes", "Sad Cities", and "Mama Tried". These are all songs that Mimi sang regularly in her live shows from the seventies and eighties. Most fascinating, perhaps, is the autobiographical "Mama Tried", which tells of her childhood growing up in many different cities as the family moved around.
This CD is a great addition to Mimi's discography. It has been made available by Michael Kleff and Banana, and
is only available through the Bread and Roses. Buying it there supports the valuable work that Bread
and Roses continues to do.
